The Secret of Killamery

The Kilkenny People wrote “The Secret of Killamery and Other Tales” is a playful read brought to life by an author brimming with imagination.

I confess, I keep imagining all kinds of scenarios in everyday life. And The Kilkenny People is right, imagination drove the writing of this book.

Let me start with the title story, The Secret of Killamery. It seems I always knew about the High Crosses of Ossary, but never thought to see them. Until recently when I visited Killamery, where I discovered not only a High Cross but also that there had been a monastery there in the 8th and 9th centuries with up to a thousand monks. My mind went into overdrive combining this ancient monastic site and the very modern theory suggesting an infinity of universes. What if, I wondered, a monk in ancient Killamery had an experience which he rationalised as suggesting he had travelled to a parallel universe? That of course God had the power to create as many universes as he wished? How would it be received? … Read and enjoy.

Bay Lough is an old corrie lake in the Knockmealdown mountains, which is the centre of the legend of Petticoat Loose. I remember as a youth being told you couldn’t swim across without being dragged down. But what if, I wondered, a young lad did swim across – would he be dragged down? How would it play out? Thats how “The Strange Case of Timmy O’Neill” came about.

I’m sure we all know someone in the community who might be a poor communicator, perhaps considered a bit dim. But maybe inside resides an altogether different person, intelligent, incisive, but unable to express himself for want of communication ability? “Mikey” explores this and takes you all the way to Lake Titicaca high in the Andes.

Is reincarnation real? “The Kyiv War Museum” follows a visitor who sees an attendant the image of Putin. It couldn’t be his reincarnation? Or Could it?

Then there are the three stories from the Emergency, as the period of World War ll is known in Ireland. “An invasion is announced” – was there a German plan to invade Ireland in 1940? “Butter” – how would people respond to butter rationing? “The Reluctant Informer”– all he wanted to do was his civic duty when his neighbour contravened the petrol rationing regulations.

So there you have it. Pure imagination all the way. Ann Tierney wrote: “It occurs to me that you must have had good fun writing the book. You certainly managed to bring this reader along on the adventure. A visit to Killamery in the near future will be made now with fresh eyes.” Well, I really did have fun writing it, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed the writing.
